On July 11th, 2023, a tragic accident happened that led to a child dying. At about seven in the evening on that Tuesday, a collision happened where 132nd Avenue Southeast meets Southeast 230th Street in Kent. A 19-year-old man was driving a black Chevy Silverado southbound on 132nd Avenue Southeast. He wanted to test his truck’s suspension, and so he used the oncoming northbound lane to pass southbound traffic. After he passed the cars, he went back into the southbound lane but pulled to the right. He crashed into a car, as well as a 12-year-old boy who was riding his scooter. The child on the scooter was on the shoulder of the road on the correct side of the white dividing line. He was known for being cautious, and at the time of the accident he was following all the laws of the road. He had been riding his scooter home from a close-by park. Before he left from the park, he texted his mom to tell her that he was on his way. She replied that she would see him soon, which was one of the final communications she ever had with her youngest son.
When they saw the accident, several pedestrians stopped and came to the aid of the seriously injured child. They also called emergency services. The bystanders gave the 12-year-old CPR until police officers arrived mere minutes later. The officers took over the life-saving effort until medical personnel (Medics and the Regional Fire Authority) got to the scene. Despite everyone’s best efforts, the child, local boy Gabriel Coury, ended up dying from his injuries. There were other passengers in the vehicle, but it is unknown if they were injured or not.
Shortly after the accident, the driver was found near to the scene. The at-fault driver was going over the speed limit, over 55 miles an hour in a 35 mph zone. He was also driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as marijuana, which likely played a big role in causing the crash. His blood alcohol content was .150 when tested, and officers reported that he smelled of alcohol. He had four alcoholic drinks before getting behind the wheel, despite being underage, and had smoked marijuana earlier in the day. When he was arrested, he didn’t have shoes or a shirt, and his neck and face were bloodied. Documents report that he was hysterical, crying, yelling, and flailing. He was taken into custody on suspicion of committing vehicular homicide. A judge set the man’s bail at $100,000. Police officers worked non-stop so that they could rush file charges, and they encourage anybody who has information about the incident to contact them.
The community was deeply impacted by the sudden death of Gabriel Coury. If the driver had just been more responsible and cared about the people around him, then this wouldn’t have happened. The Kent Police extended their condolences, and the whole neighborhood is mourning the child that died in the car accident. The neighborhood is tightly-knit, like a big family. His neighbors remember him as a respectful, sweet, lovely boy.
Gabriel Coury’s mother, Shellie Coury, was watering her garden when she heard screeching and crashing sounds. Michael Coury, the boy’s dad, could hear the sounds even from inside the house, and both of them ran to the street. They first saw the people that were in the truck that crashed. They looked around for Gabriel, but didn’t see him at first. They then saw a nightmarish scene. Gabriel’s family says that their boy cared about everybody and had a heart of gold. Every day, he showed selflessness, caring, loving, and maturity beyond his years. Someone’s reckless behavior took a vibrant youth full of love and life from this world too soon. Gabriel was the youngest of three children. He loved to make meals for his family, and he enjoyed baseball. He wanted to be a catcher, just like his older sister, and he was going to try out for a team the week after the car accident happened. Gabriel had new gear for the tryout that he never got the opportunity to use.
Gabriel’s family is striving to do what he would, which is to support and love each other during this difficult time. They’re going to stick together for him, for his honor, for their own well-being, and for each other. His parents plan to put up a sign reminding people not to drive while under the influence.
Car Accident Injury Kent Chiropractor
Car accidents happen all the time, sadly. Even if you are being safe, you could still get into a car accident because of another party. They can be very serious, like Gabriel’s case, or more minor. Even if you believe that you are fine after a car accident, you should get checked out by a car accident chiropractor in Kent. They will be able to identify if you are suffering from any issues from your accident that may not be so obvious, such as whiplash. Whiplash usually happens when a car is rear-ended, and the force of the impact causes the victim’s head to violently jerk back and forth.
